The Security Bank Foundation

Distinguished Professorial Chair in Financial Management –

Another Milestone in Bedan Education

The Security Bank Foundation Inc. entered into an academic partnership with the San Beda College Alumni Foundation (SBCAF) by donating a million pesos for the SBCAF’s Professorial Chair Program.

Last September 9, 2009, Very Rev. Fr. Mateo de Jesus, OSB, SBC Rector-President and Dr. Jaime Galvez Tan, SBCAF President launched the first-ever corporation-sponsored, professorial chair – the Security Bank Distinguished Professorial Chair in Financial Management for the SBC College of Arts and Sciences.

Launching and turnover of the million pesos donation was held at the elegant Security Bank with Mr. Rafael Simpao, Jr., Chairman of the Board of the Security Bank Foundation, Inc., Mr. Alberto Villarosa, an outstanding Bedan, President and CEO of Security Bank Corporation and 12 other Bedans handling key positions in the said bank in attendance. Fr. Matt expressed gratitude for the privilege of having an SBC professorial chair named after one of the country’s premiere banks. He said that “Security Bank for many years now has been a formidable partner of San Beda College not only in the latter’s banking needs but even in its acronym – SBC”. He further remarked how appreciative the Bedan Community is for Security Bank going the extra mile to embrace the Benedictine educational apostolate through the Professorial Chair Program.

Meanwhile SBCAF President Dr. Tan assured the management of the Security Bank Foundation that it will fully utilize the latter’s donation to enable SBC to continue providing only the best and finest Benedictine Education to the Filipino youth.

Security Bank Chairman Simpao in his message proudly announced “that the Security Bank Foundation to date has given a professorial chair to only two schools – the University of the Philippines and now, San Beda College”.

The SBC Alumni Foundation has now 10 Professorial Chairs, namely: Jose Araullo Professorial Chair in Accounting & Auditing (Recipients: Joffre M. Alajar & Ricardo Palo); Eduardo M. Cojuangco, Jr. Distinguished Chair in Social Sciences/Languages/Health Science (Recipients: Dr. Teresita A. Pedrajas, Dr. Imelda C. Santiago and Dean Tessie Da Jose); Andrew L. Gotianun Sr. Distinguished Professorial Chair in Business (Recipients: Dr. Felina C. Young, Dr. Tita Evasco-Branzuela and Dr. James Piscos); Luis I.             Indeed, the entry of Security Bank Foundation in the roster of professorial chair donors is another milestone in Bedan Education.

SPECIAL MESSAGE OF DR. JAIME Z. GALVEZ TAN

During the Launch of the Security Bank

Professorial Chair in Banking

September 9, 2009, 10:30 a.m.

Mr. Rafael Simpao, Jr, Chairman, Security Bank Foundation, Inc., Mr. Alberto Villarosa, President and CEO, Security Bank Corporation, Fr. Mateo De Jesus, OSB, Rector-President, San Beda College, Fr. Basil Apostol OSB, Moderator, Fr. Benigno Benabarre, OSB, Asst. Moderator, Fr. Anselm Manalastas, OSB, Dean, College of Arts & Sciences, fellow officers of the San Beda College Alumni Foundation and other administrators from San Beda College Manila, friends, ladies and gentlemen;

It was in 1996 when the San Beda College Alumni Foundation thought of establishing a professorial chair program for our College of Arts and Sciences as one of our special projects for our alma mater. The program administered by the Alumni Foundation has always been an endowment fund that lends support to distinguished educators in their instructional, community outreach, and research pursuits. The endowment fund was then built up by generous individuals, a number of whom were Bedan Alumni.  Two distinguished Bedans responded initially to our call for donation, they were Andrew Gotianun of Filinvest Corporation and Amb. Eduardo Cojuangco of San Miguel Corporation. Since then, a number of generous Bedan alumni responded to our call for a professorial chair donation. These Bedans included:  Joe Araullo President of Real Bank, George Yang of McDonalds, Robert Coyiuto of Prudential Guarantee Assurance, Arthur Macapagal of Toyota, Arthur Tugade of Transglobal Perry’s Group of Companies, Louie Ablaza of Ablaza Pawnshop and three years ago, Mrs. Sonia Roco for her late husband and outstanding Bedan Raul.

Today, our San Beda College Professorial Chair program marks another significant milestone as we launch the first-ever professorial chair in the field of banking in the name of the donor corporation. What makes our about-to-be-launched professorial chair so special is the fact that this is being given by a very prestigious bank whose record of leadership in the field of banking is noteworthy.

On behalf of the officers and members of the San Beda College Alumni Foundation and the entire San Beda College community, I express sincerest gratitude to the Security Bank Foundation for having thought of San Beda College as the recipient of your Professorial Chair in Banking. We understand that San Beda College is the second school to receive such honor from Security Bank, with the University of the Philippines being privileged to be the first school to receive a Professorial Chair from your good bank. Perhaps, having a Bedan as President of Security Bank matters most and, we thank my high school ’66 classmate, Alberto Villarosa for considering his alma mater for this chair donation.

We are confident that through the Security Bank Professorial Chair in Banking, we will be able to assist San Beda College in: a) attracting and retaining top caliber faculty members in the College of Business by providing them with attractive compensation package; b) recognizing meritorious service among faculty members; and c) providing the needed funds to support the community service and research outputs of our faculty member.

We are truly grateful to you, and assure you that your Professorial Chair will go a long, long way in ensuring that Bedan Education is here to stay.

Today, we do not only launch the Security Bank Corporation Professorial Chair for Banking, but launch an even stronger partnership with your prestigious bank in committing to accomplish San Beda College’s mission to lead, to teach, and to become advocates of new knowledge and be witnesses of Christ.

Thank you and let us all be grateful for this opportunity to be together in this mission of education for San Beda, country, God and now Security Bank.
