Welcome Remarks of Dr. Jaime Galvez Tan, SBCAF president
during the launch of the Capt. Gregorio Oca
Professorial Chair in Labor Relations

Atty. Jonas Cabochan, other officers and members of the San Beda College Alumni Association and Foundation, Rev. Fr. Basil Apostol, OSB, the family of our beloved Capt. Gregorio Oca, specially Mrs. Mercedes Oca, Conrad and Yvette Oca, Migs, Marissa and other family members and guests of the Oca family. Ladies and gentlemen.

It was in 1996 when the San Beda College Alumni Foundation thought of establishing a professorial chair program for our College of Arts and Sciences as one of our special projects for our alma mater. The program administered by the Alumni Foundation has always been an endowment fund that lends support to distinguished educators in their instructional, community outreach, and research pursuits. The endowment fund was then built up by generous individuals, a number of whom were Bedan Alumni. Two distinguished Bedans responded initially to our call for donation, they were Andrew Gotianun of Fil-invest Corporation and Amb. Eduardo Cojuangco of San Miguel Corporation. Since then, a number of generous Bedan alumni responded to our call for a professorial chair donation. These Bedans included: Jose Araullo President of Real Bank, George Yang of McDonalds, Robert Coyiuto of Prudential Guarantee Assurance, Arturo Macapagal of Toyota, Arthur Tugade of Transglobal Perry’s Group of Companies, Louie Ablaza of Ablaza Pawnshop, Mrs. Sonia Roco for her late husband and outstanding Bedan Raul, Security Bank Foundation, Inc., courtesy of its Bedan president Albert Villarosa, Eugenio Lopez, Jr., and last year Jesus “Chito” Francisco established his professorial chair.

Today, our San Beda College Professorial Chair program marks another significant milestone as we launch the first-ever professorial chair in the field of Labor Relations. What makes our about-to-be-launched professorial chair so special is the fact that this is being given by the Oca family to perpetuate the memory of an outstanding Bedan whose record of leadership in the field of maritime service and labor relations is noteworthy.

On behalf of the officers and members of the San Beda College Alumni Foundation and the entire San Beda College community, I express sincerest gratitude to the Oca family for having thought of San Beda College as the recipient of the Capt. Gregorio S. Oca Professorial Chair in labor relations. Perhaps, having Dr. Conrado Oca as Board Trustee of the San Beda College Alumni Foundation and former SBCAA President (2006-2007) matters most and, we thank him for considering his alma mater for this chair donation.

We are confident that through the Capt. Gregorio Oca Professorial Chair in labor relations, we will be able to assist San Beda College in: a) attracting and retaining top caliber faculty members by providing them with attractive compensation package; b) recognizing meritorious service among faculty members; and c) providing the needed funds to support the community service and research outputs of our faculty member.

We are truly grateful to you Mrs. Mercedes Oca and family, and assure you that your Professorial Chair will go a long, long way in ensuring that Bedan Education is here to stay.

Today, we do not only launch the Capt. Gregorio S. Oca Professorial Chair for labor relations, but launch an even stronger partnership with the Oca family in committing to accomplish San Beda College’s mission to lead, to teach, and to become advocates of new knowledge and be witnesses of Christ.

Thank you and let us all be grateful for this opportunity to be together in this mission of education for San Beda, country and God. And in a special way let us remember in our prayers our beloved Capt. Gregorio S. Oca.

Welcome to the formal launch of the Capt. Gregorio S. Oca distinguished professorial chair in labor relations.

Gregorio Oca, specially Mrs. Mercedes Oca, Conrad and Yvette Oca, Miguel, Marissa and other family members and guests of the Oca family. Ladies and gentlemen.

On behalf of the Rt. Rev Fr. Tarcisio Narciso, Abbot Chancellor, Dr. Manuel V. Pangilinan, Chairman of the Board, faculty members and administrators and the entire Bedan community, I wish to express my unbounded gratitude to the Oca family for choosing to establish a professorial chair in San Beda College to perpetuate the memory of an outstanding Bedan Capt. Gregorio S. Oca.

And what a fitting day to launch his professorial chair when the family is celebrating a milestone event in the married life of Capt. Gregorio and Mrs. Mercedes Fernandez Oca. As in the past, the Oca family has always been very generous in their giving of themselves, and sharing whatever they have not only to San Beda College but also to our graduates seeking employment at Seamen’s Hospital. I really take this opportunity to thank you profusely for all that the Oca family has been to San Beda College. The late Capt. Gregorio Oca will be long remembered for his enduring contribution to nation-building and the country’s economic progress. More importantly he will be long remembered by many of us for his gentle heart which had touched countless lives with his gracious philanthropy.  And I am very glad that Capt. Oca’s legacy of self-giving and selfless service is being continued by his family especially Dr. Conrad.

May the Lord continuously keep the Oca family in His care as He continuously shower you with His abundant blessings. And may you continue to be His faithful steward touching other people’s lives with the same love and mercy He has blessed you with.

Again to the Oca family, our heartfelt gratitude for the Capt. Gregorio Oca distinguished professorial chair in labor relations.   And may the recipient of this professorial chair award be a worthy one deserving of the Oca family’s kind heart.

Magandang tanghali sa inyong lahat.
