The 2010 NCAA Basketball Champions: Red Lions and Red Cubs
EXCELLENCE COMMITTED, EXCELLENCE DELIVERED

October 15, 2010 will go down the annals of SBC history as the day when the Red Lions and Red Cubs brought home the championship double of the 86th NCAA basketball season.

In a historic record-setting fashion, the Red Lions scored an 85-70 decision over the San Sebastian Stags, thus capping a perfect 18-0 season before an adoring crowd, composed mostly of alumni/ae, friends students, faculty and administration of San Beda College at the Araneta Coliseum.

“This victory belongs to our great team, our supporters and the entire Bedan community. I don’t think there’s any team in the NCAA league that has worked so hard than ours”, says coach Frankie Lim, a member of the 1978 Red Lions team that last won both the juniors’ and seniors’ crowns. It was a tough, bruising and physical competition but the Red Lions held their ground and faced the challenge to fulfill their mission of excellence.

“It has been a great season for San Beda”, says Dr. Manuel V. Pangilinan, SBC Chairman of the Board and staunch supporter of the Red Lions and Red Cubs. “I join the entire Bedan family in their joy and celebration, and send them my best and warmest wishes. My fond hope with these two champion teams is that this winning experience would only make them better Bedans and Filipinos” quips MVP.

Earlier on, the Red Cubs turned back the San Sebastian Staglets, 95-84, to complete a two-game sweep of their best-of-three championship showdown. Coach Brit Reroma, a prized cager himself, described the team as “exceptional” and dedicated the championship crown to his mentor, the SBC Hall of Famer coach Ato Badolato, who during the game was confined at the Lourdes Hospital.
Certainly, SBC’s feat will probably be difficult to match for the next NCAA seasons, and perhaps lead to bringingback the old rivalry between this year’s NCAA champion San Beda and UAAP champion Ateneo. It will be recalled that Ateneo swept FEU in their best-of-three title in the UAAP early on. This dream match will surely be the talk of the town in the days ahead, but with SBC’s fresh sterling performance, expect once again the Red Lions to display excellence as they committed, and give their best, so excellence can be delivered.
